Abstract
Jo nang pa scholar Dol po pa Shes rab rgyal mtshan (1292-1361), in his major work, Prayer Called the General Commentary on the [Kālacakratantra] Teachings, (Bstan pa spyi 'grel zhes bya ba'i gsol 'debs) presented an understanding of reality, the so-called Kālacakratantra-based other-emptiness (gzhan stong). Other-emptiness is a philosophical system which states that reality is not empty in itself, but is empty in the sense that it lacks other non-essential things. Dol po pa maintained that for a yoga practioner, tapping into empty images (stong gzugs) through the practice of Kālacakratantra six limb yoga has the same meaning as the realization of emptiness (stong pa nyid), a transcendent-immanent reality. This other-emptiness has a context of tantric practice structured by the temporality and soteriology created by the interaction between the embodied mind and the world, and it thematizes issues such as mind-body problems, non-representational cognition, transcendent-immanent temporality, etc. Through the interaction between the body of a yoga practitioner and the world, and the transformational experience of the practitioner, this practice-based other-emptiness of Dol po pa, which presents the union of cosmic time and the astral mind at the holistic level of the cosmos, postulates the equivalence of the fundamental foundations of all things, crossing the boundaries of different religio-philosophical systems and creating a hermeneutics of hierarchical integration of the sūtras into tantra. By connecting an empty image not only with luminosity ('od gsal), the reality in tantra, but also with the Buddha-nature, this way of interpreting reality contextualizes the Buddha-nature within tantra, ultimately identifying emptiness with the Buddha-nature.
