According to Dharmapāla[護法]’s definition of Sparśa[觸], its primary function is to combine three things―the sense organ, the object, and the consciousness―, and discriminate the variations, so direct the mind[心] and its associates[心所] toward the identical object. Its secondary function is to serve as a support for feeling, conceptualization, volition, etc. When Kuiji[窺基] gives an account of the primary function of Sparśa, he takes note of discrimination of the variations of the three rather than the variations themselves. It is just to give an account of the secondary function of Sparśa that serves as a support for feeling, conceptualization, volition, etc. If he wished to give an account of the primary function of Sparśa that directs the mind and its associates to the identical object, he should have paid attention to the variations of the three. So in this paper I am trying to elucidate the feature of the variations involved in the conformities of the three, Sparśa’s cause and effect of the three, the potentials of the variations of the three, and the discrimination of the variations, in order to claim that the variations of the three direct the mind and its associates to the identical object.
호법은성유식론의 제8아뢰야식을 다루는 한 대목에서 변행심소 촉(觸)을 “삼화이고 변이를 분별하는 것이니 심과 심소를 경에 촉대하게 하는 것을 체성으로 하고, 수․상․사 등의 의지처가 되어주는 것을 작업으로 한다.”고 정의하고서 이를 삼화, 변이, 변이의 분별 순으로 해명하고 있다. 규기는 이 호법의 정의와 해명을 따라가면서 촉의 체성을 주석하는데, 이때 삼화의 변이보다 ‘변이의 분별’에 주목하면서 주석했기에, 심과 심소들을 한 대상[境]에 촉대(觸對)하게 한다는, 즉 모든 심과 심소들을 이산(離散)하지 않게 해서 한 대상에 집결하게 한다는 체성에 대해 주석한 것은 아니었다. 호법은 근과 경과 식 셋이 화합하는 위(位)에 각각 촉을 비롯한 심소들을 셋에 수순해서 발생하게 하는 공능이 있다고 하고 이를 변이라 하고 있는데, 규기는 촉을 비롯한 심소들을 발생하게 하는 이 변이의 공능보다 수(受)를 비롯한 심소들을 발생하게 한다는 ‘변이의 분별’에 주목함으로써 체성을 설명해야 할 자리에서 작업을 설명하게 된 것이다. 촉이 심과 심소들을 다같이 동일한 대상에 촉대하게 한다는 본래적 기능인 체성을 풀이하려면, 변이에 중점을 두고 설명해야 한다. 그래서 이 논문에서는 첫째 삼화의 수순함, 둘째 촉의 인(因)과 과(果), 셋째 근과 경과 식 셋이 모두 각각 촉을 비롯한 심소들을 발생하게 한다는 변이의 공능, 넷째 변이의 분별에서 변이가 핵심적인 구성계기를 이루고 있으며, 이러한 변이가 심과 심소들을 동일한 대상으로 향하게 하는 세력을 갖는다고 보고, 규기의 풀이를 바로잡았다.
