This study has been conducted to examine Guifeng Zongmi (圭峰宗密)’s influence on a book titled Simseongron (『心性論』) written by Woonbong Daeji (雲峰大知) in the late 17th century. This paper consists of four chapters. Introducing the role and key factor of the nature of the mind(心性), Daeji quotes Dasheng- qixinlun-yiji (『大乘起信論義記』) written by Fazang (法藏) in many places. However, this study first attempts to examine the possibility that Daeji is actually quoting Zongmi’s Dasheng-qixinlun-shu (『大乘起信論疏』), which is a condensed version of Fazang’s Dasheng-qixinlun-yiji. To analyze the influence of Zongmi on Woonbong Daeji’s Simseongron, Chapter III is composed of two parts; the first part explicates Dasheng-qixin-lun (『大乘起信論』), and the second part deals with Seonwon jejunjip doseo (『禪源諸詮集都序』). It is important to understand how Zongmi comprehends Dasheng-qixin-lun and how this is clearly reflected in Daeji’s Simseongron. This study also aims to illuminate how Daeji’s comprehension of the nature of mind (心性) corresponds to the key factor of ‘intrinsically enlightened true mind (本覺眞心).’ It is noteworthy that The Sutra of Perfect Enlightenment (『圓覺經』) is utilized in order to understand ‘Sudden Enlightenment Gradual Cultivation (頓悟漸修),’ which appeared in Seonwon jejunjip doseo. This helps to understand a climate of theory and practice that respects ‘the joint study of Zen and Non-Zen Buddhism (禪敎兼修)’ in the late Joseon period.
본 연구는 조선후기 불교의 심성 논의에 있어, 17세기 후반에 간행된 운봉 대지의 『심성론』에 나타난 규봉 종밀의 영향을 새롭게 분석해 보는 데 의의를 두었으며, 총 4장으로 구성하였다. 대지는 『심성론』에서 심성의 요체와 역할을 제시하는 과정에서 법장의 『대승기신론의기』 내용을 다수 인용하였다. 그런데 『대승기신론의기』를 축약해서 종밀이 저술한 『대승기신론소』의 인용 가능성에 대해서는 선행연구에서 아직 언급된 적이 없다. 필자는 종밀이 『대승기신론소』의 저술에 있어서 주로 법장의 『대승기신론의기』 내용을 기반으로 했다는 점에 착안하여, 『심성론』에 직접 인용된 문헌이 종밀의 『대승기신론소』일 수 있는 가능성의 근거를 밝히는 내용으로 하나의 장(章)을 썼다. 또 다른 장에서는 운봉 대지의 『심성론』 전반에 나타난 종밀의 영향을 내용적으로 분석하였는데, 『대승기신론』 관련 1절과 『선원제전집도서』 관련 1절로 나누어 서술하였다. 『대승기신론』은 종밀 자신의 불교 이해와 사상 형성에 있어 중요한 의미를 갖는데, 대지는 『심성론』에 이러한 점을 잘 반영하였다. 그 대표적인 내용으로 ‘五重의 本末說’과 ‘寂知의 體用觀’을 꼽을 수 있다. 2절에서는 『선원제전집도서』의 내용이 대지가 이해한 심성의 내용에 어떻게 나타나고 있는지를 알아보았다. 『선원제전집도서』의 인용에 나타난 本覺眞心의 속성에 대해 ‘空寂靈知’의 개념과 관련지어 ‘一心法’에 대한 이해를 심화시킴과 동시에 본각진심의 뜻을 더 명확히 究明하였다. 또한, 『선원제전집도서』에 나타난 돈오점수설의 교리적 기반으로 『원각경』이 사용되고 있다는 점은 ‘禪敎一致’와 맥락을 같이 하는데, 『심성론』에서 대지가 돈오점수의 수행과 교학에의 연찬을 함께 강조했다는 점과 관련지어 조선후기 ‘禪敎兼修’ 지향에 녹아있는 종밀의 영향을 밝혀보고자 하였다.
