The fundamental subjects of Zongjinglu compiled by Yongming-Yanshou are comprehensively revealed in a phrase of its preface, “[I will try] to illuminate all dharmas through the principle of one-mind like a mirror. [擧一心爲宗, 照萬法如鏡].” This means that major parts of Zongjinglu are focused on explaining the relationship of one-mind (一心) and all dharmas (萬法). In this connection, we need to give a detailed account of two problems. The first problem is to know the characteristics of one-mind insisted on by Yanshou, and the second problem is to know what the fundamental method of explaining the relation of one-mind and all dharmas is.In this dissertation, I especially tried to solve the second problem by means of mind-contemplating exegesis (觀心釋), one of the methods with which Zhiyi (智顗 interpreted a sutra (經). From the point of view of the scripture study and meditation practice (敎觀) in the Tian-Tai School, mind-contemplating exegesis means the methods of realizing ultimate reality through one’s mind.On the basis of this method, Yanshou clarified a doctrine that all dharmas are come into existence by one-mind. Furthermore he tried to show concretely the inseverable relationship between one-mind and all dharmas. As a result of these efforts Zongjinglu was compiled. So mind-contemplating exegesis plays a important role not only in the fundamental methods of Yanshou’s Buddhist thought but also in the principle of compilation of Zongjinglu .
