Abstract
The modern society is facing its limits in that it can't make progress any more with the mechanism which has made it what it is. The most important factor, among many factors influencing modern society, may be an economic system. Modern economic system is characterized by numerous companies pursuing only their own profit. In the process searching for more profit, they threaten the interests of others relentlessly. The problem is that they prevent the world economy from prospering into the future. From the perspective of buddhist doctrine, modern companies are handicapped. They are very egoistic, immoral in that they do everything for profit even if it apparently devastate customers and consumers, physically and mentally. They, furthermore, pursues their happiness at the expense of other's tears. Buddha teaches us to be altruistic and moral. Of course it doesn't mean that we should be sacrificed, and moral. With those firms, comprising modern economic system, the future of our planet is very gloomy. This article is exploring a new management paradigm to save our planet. The author asserts that buddhist management paradigm can exert a significant role in our effort to save world economy and modern society. The postulated buddhist management paradigm consists of characteristics such as mutualism, value-orientedness, pursuing happiness maximization instead of profit maximization, regarding a firm as only a subsystem comprising the larger planet system.
