Abstract
This article reconsiders the Four Direction Buddhas (sabangbul) and Vairocana images making the wisdom-fist mudrā (jigwonin) in Silla through the perspective of eighth- and ninth-century Buddhist maritime networks. Previous scholarship has largely interpreted Silla Buddhist art through the reception of Chinese Buddhism, especially that of Chang’an and Luoyang, or through overland transmission. Yet surviving Tang sculptures offer few close parallels to Silla’s tathāgata-form Vairocana images with the wisdom-fist mudrā and to Four Direction Buddha images carved on pagodas.
This study examines maritime routes across the Indian Ocean and South China Sea, port cities and monasteries, and the circulation of monks, merchants, scriptures, dhāraṇīs, ritual knowledge, and portable Buddhist objects. The records of Yijing, the sea voyages of Vajrabodhi and Amoghavajra, and the activities of Silla monks and maritime communities indicate that Silla was connected to the Buddhist worlds of southern Chinese ports, particularly Guangzhou, as well as to wider maritime Asia.
The article compares the directional Buddhas at Borobudur with the gilt-bronze plaques excavated from the three-story stone pagoda at Biroam Hermitage, Donghwasa Temple. Neither example precisely conforms to a standardized Five Buddha system or to the Vajradhātu maṇḍala. Instead, both reveal locally configured combinations of Mahāyāna ideas of directional Buddhas, Huayan concepts of the dharma body, relic veneration, dhāraṇī practices, and esoteric symbols. Rather than claiming direct transmission from Java to Silla, this article argues that maritime networks provided conditions for the selective reception and regional reconfiguration of Buddhist knowledge and material culture in Silla.
