This study compares Chapter 32 of the Avataṃsaka Sūtra in the Mongolian version, titled “samanta badr-a uqaɤuluɤsan neretü bülüg (‘What Samantabhadra preached and enlightened’),” with the Manchurian version of the Samantabhadra Sūtra, and examines how the Sanskrit translation in the Manchurian version corresponds to or differs from the Mongolian Avataṃsaka Sūtra, Chapter 32. The Mongolian version spans Volumes 54 to 59.
In the Mongolian version of the Avataṃsaka Sūtra, the 32nd chapter appears from line 3 of volume 56, 182a, to line 20 of 188b.
In this paper, the 32nd chapter of the Mongolian Avataṃsaka Sūtra and the Manchurian 『Bohyeonsoseolpum』 are compared according to the following criteria.
First, comparing the opening and closing sections of the Mongolian and Manchurian versions reveals that their structures and contents differ.
Second, comparing Chapter 32 of the Mongolian Avataṃsaka Sūtra with the Manchurian version shows discrepancies in both content and narrative style, indicating that the translator of the Manchu Samantabhadra Sūtra did not rely on the Mongolian Avataṃsaka Sūtra, Chapter 32.
Consequently, this study confirms that the Sanskrit translation of the Manchurian 『Bohyeonsoseolpum』 differs from the Sanskrit translation of Chapter 32 of the Mongolian Avataṃsaka Sūtra. It appears that the translator of the Manchurian 『Bohyeonsoseolpum』 adhered to a distinct set of translation rules.

본 연구는 몽고문 『화엄경』 제32 「samanta badr-a uqaɤuluɤsan neretü bülüg(‘사만타 바드라(보현)가 설하여 깨닫게 한 것’이라고 이름하는 품)」과 만문 『보현소설경』을 비교하고, 만문 『보현소설경』의 범어 음역어가 몽고문 『화엄경』 제32품의 범어 음역어와 어떻게 같고 다른지에 대해 고찰한 것이다.
몽고문 『화엄경』은 『몽고문대장경』 제54권부터 제59권까지 모두 6권이며, 몽고문 『화엄경』 제32품은 제56권 182a 3행부터 188b 20행까지이다.
몽고문 『화엄경』에는 한역의 「십정품」에 해당하는 제33품 앞에 티베트어 역 「보현소설품」에 해당하는 32번째 품이 있다. 몽고문에는 만문의 서두에 보이는 “‘이와 같이’라고 내 들었다. 한 때에(uttu seme mini donjiha emu forgon de)”라고 한 문구가 없다.
본고에서는 몽고문 『화엄경』 제32품과 만문 『보현소설경』을 다음의 몇 가지 측면에서 비교하였다.
첫째, 몽고문과 만문의 서두와 말미 내용을 비교해 보면, 그 구성과 내용이 같지 않음을 알 수 있다.
둘째, 몽고문 『화엄경』 제32품과 만문 『화엄소설경』을 대조해 보면, 내용적으로나 서술 방식에 있어 차이를 보이며, 이는 만문 『보현소설경』의 번역자가 몽고문 『화엄경』 제32품에 의거하지 않았음을 말해준다.
셋째, 만문 『보현소설경』의 번역자는 한역 『대방광보현소설경』을 주요 저본으로 하면서도 범어 음역에 있어서는 한역본에 의거하지 않았는데, 본 연구 결과 만문 『보현소설경』의 범어 음역어는 몽고문 『화엄경』 제32품의 범어 음역어와 다르다는 것을 확인하였다. 만문 『보현소설경』의 번역자는 범어 음역에 있어 독자적인 규정이 있었고 이에 따랐을 것으로 추정된다.
