In his approach to Hwaŏm philosophy and practice, the Koryŏ monk Ŭich’ŏn (1055-1101) was heavily influenced by Chinese Huayan masters, notably Chengguan (738-839), the fourth patriarch of Chinese Huayan. As a result, he was very critical of preceding Korean Hwaŏm masters: especially of Kyunyŏ (923-972), but probably of Ŭisang (625-702) as well. However, as he was the founder of his tradition, it was impossible for Ŭich’ŏn to openly criticize Ŭisang. Ŭich’ŏn’s remaining writings also do not discuss Ŭisang’s thought at all. In this article I will therefore focus on the spelling of Ŭisang’s name in Ŭich’ŏn’s writings: rather than the conventional forms 義相 or 義湘 that are used in most sources, and also by modern scholars, he consistently used the spelling 義想. This was not for taboo reasons as previously surmised, but rather because Ŭich’ŏn found the use of the character 相 inappropriate, for a variety of reasons. One of these was that it was commonly used to refer to the Yogȃcāra tradition (Sangjong 相宗), in contrast to the 性宗 (Sŏngjong), referring to Hwaŏm and other traditions centered on tathāgatagarbha doctrine. Although 相宗 was originally used by Huayan scholars in a derogatory sense, Chengguan reevaluated it positively, arguing that Huayan scholars should also study Yogȃcāra. Ŭich’ŏn was clearly critical of previous Korean Hwaŏm masters, including Ŭisang, who eschewed this tradition, and thereby remained mired in an intellectual, discursive approach to Buddhism rather than a well-rounded approach that sought to rise above discursive approaches.
의천은 화엄종 4조인 징관(澄觀, 738-839)의 사상에 깊이 경도되었으며, 이를 바탕으로 균여는 물론 의상 계통의 화엄사상 전반을 비판했던 것으로 추정된다. 본 논문에서 의천이 자신의 저서에서 의상의 이름을 일관되게 ‘의상(義相)’이 아닌 ‘의상(義想)’으로 표기한다는 점의 재검토를 통해 의천의 의상에 대한 태도를 조금 더 구체적으로 규명하고자 한다. 이는 단순한 실수나 피휘(避諱)를 위한 것이 아니라, 의천이 의상이 ‘상종(相宗),’ 즉 유식사상을 잘 습득하지 못했다고 생각했기 때문에 비판하려는 의도가 담긴 표기라고 가정한다. 의천은 징관의 영향으로 불교 학파를 성종(性宗)과 상종(相宗)으로 구분했다. 그에게 상종은 주로 유식 불교를, 성종은 『대승기신론(大乘起信論)』이나 화엄 계통을 가리켰다. 본래 상종은 현장(玄奘)의 유식 불교를 비판하기 위해 법장(法藏)이 만든 표현이었으나, 징관과 의천 등 후대 사상가들은 이 개념을 적극적으로 재검토하여 화엄 체계 내에서 나름의 긍정적 역할을 부여하기도 하였다.
