This study measured the linguistic differences between traditional Buddhist texts and secular meditation content using corpus-linguistic methods. It compared the T group, which consisted of Pali suttas, commentaries, and modern writings in the Theravada vipassana tradition, with the Y group, which consists of YouTube meditation content. The Y group is further divided into traditional Theravada Buddhist channels (Y1), commercial platforms (Y2), and individual creators (Y3) in order to distinguish media effects from secularization effects. Linguistic characteristics were measured using 13 indicators across 6 analytical dimensions, and the results were tested through a three-stage statistical procedure.
Three patterns of change emerged. First, the pattern of loss: expressions of non-identification, disciplinary language, striving, compassion directed toward others, and analytical language declined sharply in secular content. Second, the pattern of reversal: expressions of self-reification, permissive language, softening adverbs, non-striving, self-compassion, and non-analytical language were absent in traditional texts but emerged in secular content. Third, the pattern of amplification: expressions relating to bodily sensation and mental states appeared frequently in both traditional and secular materials, but increased further in secular content.
A notable finding is that the patterns of loss and reversal form semantic pairs. Where non-identification disappeared, self-reification emerged; where striving disappeared, non-striving emerged; and where compassion directed toward others disappeared, self-compassion emerged. This suggests not merely the omission of traditional vocabulary, but its replacement by opposing concepts. In other words, language originally designed to teach non-self has been transformed into language that encourages the discovery and care of the self.

본 연구는 전통 불교 텍스트와 세속 명상 콘텐츠 간 언어적 차이를 코퍼스 언어학 방법론으로 측정하였다. 테라와다 위빠사나 전통의 팔리 경전, 주석서, 현대 저작으로 구성된 T그룹과 YouTube 명상 콘텐츠로 구성된 Y그룹을 비교하였다. Y그룹은 전통 테라와다 불교 채널 Y1, 상업 플랫폼 Y2, 개인 창작자 Y3로 구분하여 매체 효과와 세속화 효과를 분리하였다. 6개 축 13개 지표로 언어적 특성을 측정하고 3단계 통계 검정을 수행하였다.
분석 결과, 세 가지 변화 유형이 확인되었다. 첫째, 소실 유형으로 비동일시, 훈육적, 정진, 타자자비, 분석적 표현이 세속 콘텐츠에서 급감하였다. 둘째, 역전 유형으로 자아실체화, 허용적, 완화부사, 탈정진, 자기자비, 탈분석적 표현이 전통에서 0이었으나 세속에서 출현하였다. 셋째, 증폭 유형으로 신체감각, 마음상태 표현이 전통과 세속 모두에서 높았으나 세속에서 더욱 증가하였다.
