Abstract

This study analyzes how Buddhist scripture translation (譯經) was institutionalized and practiced in modern Korean Buddhism, focusing on the translation projects of Ven. Unheo. In the transmission and establishment of Buddhism, translation functioned not merely as linguistic conversion but as a crucial medium through which Buddhism encountered new societies. Likewise, the history of Korean Buddhism has unfolded largely through translation activities. However, previous studies have tended to emphasize achievements in particular periods or the personal vows of individual monks, paying relatively little attention to translation as a problem of institutional structure and continuity. To address this gap, this study reconstructs Ven. Unheo’s translation projects not as individual accomplishments but as a comprehensive form of practice responding to the historical challenges faced by Korean Buddhism in the post-liberation period. It first examines state-led translation initiatives in early Joseon Korea and individual-centered translation activities during the Japanese colonial period, identifying the structural limitations that hindered their institutional sustainability. It then analyzes the establishment of the Center for Dongguk Translation of Buddhist Sutra (東國譯經院), the Temporary Translation Headquarters(易經臨時本部), efforts to standardize translation terminology, the training of translators, and the operation of translation centers, highlighting Ven. Unheo’s attempts to institutionalize translation as a public, sect-wide enterprise. Particular attention is given to the affiliation of the translation institute with Dongguk University in the 1960s and the securing of government subsidies, which framed translation as both a national cultural project and a public undertaking. Furthermore, by examining publication and distribution as integral components of translation work, this study critically reassesses prevailing misconceptions regarding the founding of Beopbowon Publishing House. Through this analysis, Ven. Unheo’s translation projects are repositioned as a form of public practice integrating translation, institutionalization, publication, and distribution, offering implications for rethinking the public responsibility and accountability of Buddhist translation in the contemporary context.

본 연구는 근현대 한국불교에서 역경(譯經)이 어떠한 방식으로 제도화되고 실천되었는지를 운허의 역경 사업을 중심으로 분석하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 불교의 전파와 정착 과정에서 역경은 단순한 언어 변환을 넘어 불교가 새로운 사회와 만나는 핵심 매개로 기능해 왔으며, 한국불교도 역경을 통해 전개되어 왔다. 그럼에도 불구하고 기존 연구는 특정 시기의 성과나 개인의 원력에 주목하는 경향이 강하였고 역경을 제도와 구조의 문제로 다룬 논의는 상대적으로 부족하였다. 이에 본 연구는 운허의 역경 사업을 개인적 업적이 아닌, 해방 이후 한국불교가 직면한 시대적 과제에 대한 실천으로 재구성하였다. 먼저 조선 전기 국가 주도의 역경과 일제강점기 개인 원력 중심의 역경을 검토하여 근현대 이전 역경이 제도적 지속성을 확보하지 못한 구조적 한계를 밝힌다. 이어 동국역경원 설립과정과 역경임시본부, 역경용어 정비, 역경사 양성, 역장 운영 등을 분석하여 운허가 역경을 종단의 공적 사업으로 제도화하고자 했던 시도를 구체적으로 고찰한다. 특히 1960년대 동국대학교 산하기관으로 역경원을 설치하고 국가보조금을 확보한 과정은 역경을 민족문화사업이자 공공의 과제로 인식한 전략적 선택으로 평가된다. 아울러 본 연구는 출판과 유통을 통한 역경 사업에 주목하여, 법보원 설립 주체를 둘러싼 기존 인식의 오류를 자료 비판을 통해 재검토한다. 이를 통해 본 연구는 운허의 역경 사업을 번역·제도·출판·유통이 결합된 공적 실천으로 재위치시키고, 오늘날 다양한 불교 전통의 경전과 문헌이 대량으로 번역 유통되는 현실 속에서 역경의 공공성과 책임성을 재사유할 시사점을 제시하고자 한다.
